For several years, Heritage has supported Doctors Judith and Richard Brown, medical missionaries in Kenya. They were recently retired from the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), but are continuing their medical and mission work in Kenya. The Missions Committee of Heritage has voted to continue to support the Browns in their efforts. Following are excerpts from a letter received recently from Judith and Dick. "...We are indeed continuing to work in Kenya, but now as volunteers with many different church hospitals, both Protestant and Catholic... we find many dedicated Kenyan doctors and nurses who are quite experienced in working with AIDS patients and their families. Now that the prices of anti-retroviral medicines have dropped, the drugs are within reach of some middle-class patients. After a few weeks, many of these patients improve greatly and can return to work and family responsibilities. For others, though, the medicines have come too late, so they are receiving palliative care as their life nears the end.... Besides trying to aid the sick, and to care for orphans, the hospitals also challenge people to prevent infection and thus slow the epidemic. These tasks are daunting, but it's an exciting time to be working in Africa..." | |
